Proverbs 25:28 says “Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man who has no self control over his spirit.”
A major factor that determines success in life is your ability to exercise control. Control brings order, direction, and stability. Without it, things easily go out of hand and become destructive.
While it is important to manage external systems and situations around you, it is even more important to master control over yourself. The greatest form of control is self control. If you can govern yourself, you can handle anything else.
No matter how well you manage people, opportunities, or environments, if you fail to control your own desires and emotions, you will eventually lose ground in life. Many people do not fail because of external pressures, but because they lack control within.
Self control may not be easy, but it is possible. You must learn to regulate your desires, your appetite for pleasure, your emotions, and even your ambitions. When you allow yourself to act without restraint, you open the door for wrong decisions and sinful actions that can ruin your life.
Self control requires conscious and consistent practice. It involves setting limits for yourself in your thoughts, words, and actions so that you do not go contrary to the will of God. It is the discipline of saying no to what is wrong and yes to what is right, even when it is not convenient.
When self control is at work in your life, you will not live carelessly. You will act with wisdom, restraint, and purpose.
